Colored backgrounds can be replaced entirely or partly replaced with a totally new image or video setting by using a technique called Green Screen. This technique is commonly used in the film industry, for video and for still photography, and is also called Chroma Key.

(As seen above, the original show was filmed using a green-screen in the background and then editing software was used to replace the green-screen with a different image setting)

In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to do green screen with Cyberlink PowerDirector.

The two files would be stored side by side on the main video track. Select the green screen footage on the timeline which is the foreground video or image, and then drag it upwards and drop it on the overlay track. The overlay track is situated above the main video track where the background clip would still be located.

Next, you would need to double-click on the foreground video and then chose Chroma key from the list on the left. You would see a green box which says, “Pick a color to make transparent” appearing below Chroma key on the list. Check the box.

Head back over to the preview window where you would see the green screen footage. When you click on it, the green part of the footage would immediately become transparent.

(Note: The green screen footage can me moved to anywhere you want to place it and you can also resize it)

You would then need to adjust the sliders for the Tolerance and Noise levels to ensure that the background footage is clearly visible.

The final step is to click on “Apply”.
